Senator Marshall Has Walked-Out of Town Halls, Returned Postcards, and Called the Police on Constituents

KANSAS | Last week, Prairie Progress Civic Action, in partnership with Leading Kansas and Boots on the Ground Midwest, delivered a petition with 3,850 signatures from Kansans across the state to two of Senator Roger Marshall's offices. The petition requests that Senator Marshall participate in a public town hall event with his constituents to address their concerns on federal issues impacting Kansas families—something he has not done in over 385 days.

"We showed up this week because Kansans deserve to be heard by their elected officials," said Jessica Cooney of Prairie Progress Civic Action. "Senator Marshall continues to ignore thousands of constituents who are asking for nothing more than a chance to speak with him about the issues affecting our communities. When a Senator refuses to meet with the people he represents, he's not doing his job. Kansans are stepping up to hold him accountable."

Roger Marshall has a history of ignoring, avoiding, and dodging Kansans seeking answers. This is not about a single incident. It is about a pattern of disengagement that raises a basic question of accountability and access.

We have big plans to continue holding our politicians accountable.

A History of Roger Marshall ignoring, avoiding, and dodging Kansans seeking answers

March 2025: Walked Out of Oakley Town Hall (KAKE, Lily O’Brien, 3.1.25)

  • In March 2025, Senator Marshall abruptly abandoned a town hall in Oakley, leaving constituents who had driven hours to attend without answers.

  • Within the first 5 minutes, he threatened to leave if attendees kept “interrupting” him— despite witnesses saying questions were from “normal Kansans who wanted their voice to be heard.”

  • Marshall’s staff attempted to control the conversation by passing around notecards and pens to filter out and pre-screen questions. When attendees raised their concerns about DOGE cuts, employment, cuts to veterans’ benefits, and more, Marshall walked out.

April 2026: Returned Constituents’ Postcards(Prairie Progress Civic Action, 4.28.26)

  • When constituents mailed “Greetings from Kansas” postcards to Senator Marshall’s Florida residence, requesting a town hall and detailing real concerns affecting them, their families, and their communities, he mailed them back marked “return to sender.”

May 2026: Ignored Meeting Requests

  • Prairie Progress Civic Action submitted a formal meeting request via Marshall’s website nearly two weeks ago to deliver the petition signatures.

  • Marshall’s office never responded.

May 27, 2026: Called Police on Constituents(12NEWS, Angela Smith, 5.27.26)

  • When Kansans peacefully left petition signatures at his office, his office called in the bomb squad.

  • Wichita police confirmed the boxes posed no threat to the public.

May 29, 2026: Ignored Meeting Requests Again(KC Star, Jack Harvel, 5.29.26)

  • On May 29, protesters delivered 3,800 signed petitions from Kansans across the state to Marshall’s Overland Park office.

  • Michelle Bridges from Wyandotte County told a reporter: “I call Roger Marshall’s office many times, and I noticed that nobody ever answers the phone. I leave a lot of voicemails. So I wanted to check out the office that’s in my area, in KCK. I drove by one time. Nobody seemed to be there. I went back another time and looked around. There seemed to be nobody there. I walked up to the office, and I walked in the front door. I talked to the security guards and asked if there’s any way I could make an appointment. They said, ‘no, nobody’s here.’ I said I just want to reach my senator. They said this is not an office. They said somebody comes by once in a while to pick up the mail, but there’s no one here.”

385+ Days: No Public Events

  • Senator Marshall has not held a single public town hall in over a year, despite repeated requests from constituents across the state.

  • One frustrated Kansan said, “He doesn’t want his constituents there. He didn’t advertise this openly.”
